Challenging Firearms Identifications

In homicide cases involving firearms, the prosecutor will invariably call a firearms and toolmarks examiner to testify regarding any bullets, casings and firearms that were recovered.  Often these "experts" will claim that a recovered bullet or casing could have only been fired from a gun the police recovered that is then linked to your client.  Firearms and toolmarks identification is one of the areas considered unvalidate science in the 2009 National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report on Strengthening Forensic Science and anyone handling a case where this evidence is critical must learn how to challenge the crime lab expert.
